Hot Wheels are die-cast model vehicles manufactured by American toy-maker Mattel and were first introduced back in 1968. The original diecast Hot Wheels models were manufactured on a scale of 1.64 and were produced to fit on the Hot Wheels track sets. However, by 1970 Hot Wheels started to produce a series of models of a 1.43 scale, these were known as ‘Gran Toros’ and were made by Mebetoys.

More recently Hot Wheels have manufactured a range of highly detailed adult’s collector’s cars. However, the small scale model cars still appear to remain the favourites. These small scale model cars include the famous hot-rods and muscle cars, both of which have appeared since the start of the Hot Wheels range.

The Hot Wheels vehicles that appeared on the market during the 1980s set the path for what Hot Wheel models are today. The Hot Wheels vehicles known as the Hot Ones that appeared in the 1981 featured gold-painted hubs, additional suspension and thinner axils to elevate speed. Other innovations such as new wheel designs, thermal colour change paint and rotating crash panel vehicles were also introduced in the 1980s, making Hot Wheels the leader in its field.

More innovative changes came in the 1990s as well as the during the past decade making Hot Wheels slogan ‘Hot Wheels lead the way’ true to its form.

Over the years, Hot Wheels vehicles have mainly been collected by children, however, in the past decade there has been an increase in the amount of adult collectors. This is perhaps because they have been around for so many years or perhaps it’s because of the quality, dedication and detailing on the models themselves.
